The doctor was very reluctant to prescribe me it.

You should speak with your doctor about it, asthma is not usually treated with steroids as far as I know (note I am not a doctor), so something else is probably going on. Also your doctor is aware of the fact that you have been on steroids before and is well aware of the side effects of being on it for a long period of time. I have to add though if your doctor is recommending you to take the medicine you should definitely take it and continue to do so if you are, unless you have bad side effects, in which case you should inform him/her.
Also on the off chance the drugs have not been prescribed by a doctor you should cease taking them and actually go to a doctor to be evaluated.

A) If your doctor prescribed it then 'Yes' take it! But-your prescription should allow for a tapering off as in day 3 only take 2x day not 3,day5-1x something like that b/c Prednisone is very strong and addictive,my husband has had to take several times - take as much vitamin C as you can,but a couple hours apart, also D. If dosage does not taper as described ask doctor WHY?!

no dont take it.
my doc also said I have asthma and gave me prednisolone, but after reading about that black American lady whose knee joints melted from steroids, i opted for herbal medicine and within 5 days was cured.
Take a herbal medicine that contains "Terminalia Chebula"

I think that, like me, you may have bronchial asthma - which is very different and distinct from regular asthma. With bronchial asthma, the wheezing and phlegm on the lungs is brought on after you catch a cold which does not clear up and progressively gets worse, with mucus from the cold dripping down onto the throat and then on to the lungs, hence causing the dreaded wheeze.
I've had this all my life and prednisone has helped me get over it. I know it's a bitch of a drug but it works and you just have to grit your teeth and see out the course of medication.
One thing I would recommend, if you haven't already done so, is to buy a nebuliser. You can use it to inhale Pulmacort and Combivent in a steam-like gas. I prefer it to the regular inhalers because the steam from the nebuliser helps to dislodge the phlegm, whilst still getting the Pulmicort and Combivent to the lungs. Plus, if you leave the wheeze untreated, the phlegm will only get infected and lead to Pneumonia, which is something you really don't need.
So keep on with the prednisone - it won't last for ever.
Good luck.
