Allergy Testing? "Scratch" tests scheduled. Please any advice or knowledge?I'm terrified. I remember as a young girl at about 4, I had these tests done. They wish to re-test me as I don't have the results, and it's 20 years later.
I was highly allergic (+5) to about everything they did to me. They took needles and poked all over my back and did this about 3-4 times. It itched and hurt so bad I was screaming and crying in pain. I remember this so clear like it was yesterday. It was very traumatizing to me.
I am terrified to get this procedure or anything similar done. The allergist wanted to do skin scratch testing on my arms. Do the welts stay? How do they make them go away? Will I be affected all day? He made me 2 appointments and said for any negative results they'd use the other arm to put something under my skin.
Please any advice or BTDT? I know I'm allergic to all trees, pollens, grasses, animals, dust, etc... already and I don't want to torture myself if it isn't warranted.
Thanks!
I'm going to ask my Mom for the testing doctor's name or something. I remember the location but not the exact address. Maybe if I grab the results and show this allergist. I don't want to be tortured like this. I have to always be alert and on the go. I have a very active 12 month old and I can't afford to be itchy and feeling like crapola over some allergy test that wasn't needed.
They applied rubbing alcohol over the welts when I was a kid. I can remember the smell and the stings. My mom was given some huge 10+ page report showing I had very severe allergies to everything that they could possibly test me for. I was very sick as a child.
I'm itching and hyperventilating thinking about this. I don't know if I can endure it, just thinking about it's bothering me. My backs all itchy and so is my head.... grrrr
I found the place! There's 2 of them that could match so I'm going to call on Tuesday. Wo0t!
I can't take benydryl as I am breast feeding ;(

yea they did that to me too when was like 8 they poked me everywhere on my arms and watever spots came out red that would mean i was allergic to it i can still remmember it and i think that it went away overnight but since your doctor made you 2 appointments i dont really know My advice is to just try to face your fears and go and if you know that you cant do it try to work something out with your doctor to see if there are any other procedures you can do.

its all pain in the name of science. its not as bad as you remember from childhood but you will get welts and they wont magically disappear. as a kid all the poking and prodding woudl probably be a nightmare -- but i promise it isn't that bad. i have found plain old benedryl to work the best for most allergy symptoms and if that doesn't do it then you just get to suffer. if you have sinus allergies a neti pot rinse twice a day is better than anything else i have found. allergy doctors are kinda wack -- i think everyone expects too much from doctors. and doctors like the color of your money. if you need an operation get a doctor -- if you don't then they don't do a lot of good.

I too had scratch tests when I was younger. I remember before going to allergy clinic they gave me some cream to apply onto my arm, did they give you any cream of some sort? Even if they didn't I'm sure the needles today are better and faster (goes in and comes out quicker) than they are 20 years ago...

Hi,
Here's a video with information about it. It says it's not painful.
It shows how it's done and some guy who gets the procedure done.
The bumps last a day apparently.
It looks pretty painless and easy to me :)
