Cant Breathe at Night ......After I fall asleep?Ugh ok here it goes.... I quit smoking about a month ago because my body had enough obviously after smoking a pack a day for 13 years. I felt short of breath and coughed alot at night and was on a inhaler which worked and took my cough away and helped me cough up the phlegm . Since I quit smoking I have alot of trouble breathing especially at night. I wake up every night 3 hrs after i have fallen asleep in a panic because i feel like im being suffocated or strangled . My chest is real tight and Im wheezing , Im on a Inhaler that is basically used for people with Copd so its pretty strong and also Im using a nebulizer both od these do NOTHING for me AT ALL. I don't understand why they aren't helping me because the whole point of them is to help you "breathe". I also have a oxygen meter that i used last night, all it does is measure my oxygen levels and heart rate last night when i woke up because i felt the same I cant breath feeling my oxygen levels were in the 80's and my heart rate was 120!!! and all I was doing was sleeping lol!!! Why is this happening? why isn't the medicine working? my dr has no idea whats wrong and Ive also had a chest xray and its shows nothing. Its scary I don't know what to do, and to make matters worse I cough at night when I cant breathe and I have herniated discs in my spine and bone spurs so it hurts SO bad :( I can barely walk at all ...Plz help I just want some comfort or ideas of what it could be or how I can help myself . Oh and I notice if I sleep sitting up like a crazy ass I can breathe wtf!!! Im not coughing up anything either and for some reason when I do cough I can taste a Burnt or Bloood taste in my mouth !

Hi, if you are having your oxygen monitored, it must be because your doctor is concerned about the possibility that your oxygen level is not always what it should be. It is important that you share this information with the physician who is treating you. He may perform tests to see if you need supplimental oxygen or decide to have you undergo a sleep study according to what he or she finds to be indicated. The damage caused by smoking cannot be reversed, but with the right medical treatment, you can have a much improved quality of life for many years to come. It is of the utmost importance that you live tobacco free and to take any respiratory medicines with regularity. One thing that I might suggest is that during these times that you are short of breath, exhale slowly with your lips "pursed" with COPD it takes more time to get the air out of your lungs. Your doctor should be able to give you tips on some lifestyle accommodations that will help you to continue to be active. Give yourself more time to do things. I wish you well and breathe easy.
