Asthma Info: Laptop overheating (?) issue?

Laptop overheating (?) issue? My G4 Titanium laptop, which was 3 years old when I got it, sounds like it's having a hard time "breathing." The fan starts running and making an awful noise if I have too many programs open (we're talking Safari, Word, and Apple mail - not a lot) or if I watch a short video.

It sometimes does this when the machine is running at 27 degrees C, and sometimes is silent at 45 (ouch) C. My thought is there's dust buildup in the machine, but my Mac guru refuses to believe this is a possibility. He just said I needed a new laptop (which I got). But I'd still like to know what's going on with my Ti-book. To me, it seems like when a blowdryer shuts off because the lint needs to be cleaned out.

Any thoughts? Does anyone ever open up a laptop like this, or is it just asking for trouble? I obviously wouldn't do it myself, but I was wondering if Apple would.

It makes a fine backup machine, at least.

Thanks!
Thanks, you're all brilliant. I was so sure it was dust buildup. For those who asked, yes, my laptop sits on a pretty high stand -- about 8 inches off the desktop -- specifically designed to allow excellent air circulation.
I cannot choose a Best Answer - sorry - there were too many good ones. I'll leave it to you to decide. And thanks again.

This sounds really obvious, so excuse me for stating it if so!

I assume you use a stand for air circulation and not directly on the lap?

Because if directly on the lap, then, yes it would certainly overheat over time.

If you already do this, how about blowing out the dust with a hairdryer, it just might work!

your mac guru sounds like a peanut

head to the dissassembly guide and yes you can take it apart. i would wear an antistatic band for this.

ues compressed air or a vacuum cleaner but be careful. also make sure that you dont have any dead ram modules that could labour the system

let me know how you go

Apple will charge you a fair chunk for cleaning, though they will do an excellent job and replace the fan if required.
Take it to a local repair shop if you have to but you can buy a can of compressed air from most good retailers and blast the vent holes to remove the dust and lint yourself.
I believe that on the Apple website is a tutorial on dismantling various models, find yours and you can take it apart yourself and clean it. You could also get some heatsink (thermal) paste and re-paste the CPU after cleaning the fan this may also reduce the overall Temp.
You should be able to get a new fan (if required) from a Mac repair center or even from Ebay.

I have taken a lot of desktop computers apart, but the laptops are a bit tricky. You can take it to Staples or Circuit City and they can take it apart and clean it out for you. It sounds as though it has a bit of dust built up around the fans.
Do you use something under it to keep it running cool? It sure helps.
Good luck. Your computer should last longer than 3 years.
