This is two separate questions. I remember back when I smoked, sometimes I couldn't take in a good full breath?of air....like I was "Short of breath".
My friend starts to pant, or breathe really fast just by getting up and going to the other room....like a different form of being "short of breath" because she isn't trying to take in a deep breath, she is panting as if she ran around the block. She isn't over weight and I am trying to look up her symptoms. I don't know if "shortness of breath" is the right words to google since I was short of breath, in a different way, when I smoked. So, when someone says they are "short of breath", does that mean they can't take in a deep breath?…or does it mean they are panting and are out of breath?

I think it can mean both ways. Your friend should probably see a Dr. about this to be safe. I have known several people that would get out of breath real quick and they ended up dying from a heart attack. My one friend was only 44 years old.

Shortness of breath with activity could indicate a heart condition, such as congestive heart failure. It also could indicate a lung condition. If your friend smokes, especially if she is older and smokes or used to smoke, then this could be the culprit.
But when someone says they are "short of breath," you have to take several factors into consideration. How old is the person? Does the person have asthma, allergies, heart or lung problems, anxiety? Not being able to take a deep breath can mean many things.
People tend to hyperventilate when under a lot of stress/anxiety. Shortness of breath, especially accompanied by chest pain, should always be considered life-threatening until proved otherwise.

lack of oxygen meaning they need a nebulizer treatment. SOB.

SOB that your friend has seems to be a type that could be a symptom of an underlying condition. I had this all my life from my Aortic valve...now my 2 sons have the same. I get it even when doing basic things like hanging the washing on the line. Your friends may or may not need treatment...its probably wise for them to be assessed by a doctor.
I know exactly what you mean about the difference between smokers SOB and this other type...I used to smoke (bad girl!) but even after I quit I still had this other different SOB...that comes on even without physical exertion.
Yes SOB is the correct term for you to Google...
