How to treat the allergy to iodine contrast material (after CAT scan)? In the evening of the day I made CAT scan I had reddish spots appeared on my palms with hives. I learned that this is a common allergic reaction to CT dye.
My PCP first prescribed antihistamine Benedryl. Taking these pills decreased itching at palms. However after I stopped taking the Benedryl, the red spots and itching reappeared.
After that I was prescribed 6 day course of steroids, Methylprednisolone 4mg tablets. This did not help. Then Prednisone 10mg tablets, 3tabX3days, 2tab/3days and 1tab/3 days.
It looks like if I reduce the dosage of the last tablets the "allergy" comes back. Before I go to the allergist maybe someone can give me advise how to get rid of this allergy. Thanks a lot.

THe IVP dye they used should have been out of your body by now??? If it continues I would get on the phone to your doctor ASAP and stay away from IVP dye and all iodine.

just make sure if you have another cat scan that you reciev a steroid prep prior to the study-you might need a stronger steroid-b/c if you have the test w/o the prep your allergic reaction can be very bad the second time around
