How should a student respond to "you should know that" when asking a sincere question?Admittedly my son is a little slow on the uptake. He is frequently sick due to allergies and the such. So his grades aren't the best. When he takes his time and sees a teacher at their convenience and ask questions from the days activities or a test he too often hears the teacher say "you should know that" and receives no help.

Your son should say, "Well, (sir, miss, or suitable title) I really don't know that. Because I wasn't at school when that subject was covered."
Or: "I'm sorry, but I just didn't understand it when you covered it. I should be grateful if you could explain it briefly for me."
The main thing here is to be polite. Getting cocky or belligerent won't help anyone.
If your son doesn't get any help from the teacher, maybe he could go to the school library, or look for information on his computer. Of course, father (hint, hint!) is always good for some help, isn't he?
