What should I do for a drug allergy rash?

Asthma Info edited the following:

What should I do for a drug allergy rash?My daughter had a reaction to penicillin and was given "anti-hive" Claritin for it. She still has the rash/hives. How long should I wait to see results and for the hives to go away before I contact the doctor again? THANKS!
My daughter is 17yrs old. We DID discontinue the penicillin and doctor recommended the Claritin 2 days ago, but rash/hives are still apparent. Doctor didn't seem too concerned last time she was seen, but my daughter's discomfort level is high. Maybe a second opinion?

How long ago did you give her the Claritin? I thought the dr. would have given Benadryl. It works faster, imo, but it makes you drowsy.

If it was within a few hours,I would call a dr. ASAP.

If there is any facial swelling, wheezing/difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, or unconciousness, get to an E.R!! That could be anaphylatic shock--a potentially fatal allergic reaction if it is not treated quickly.

I take it the Doctor told you to give her the Claritin for this? If so, you should consult with his office. Since it is a weekend I recommend you call your local hospital and talk with a R.N. or Doctor about it.

Allergic reactions to anything should be taken very seriously since they are life threatening. Call the hospital.
