Why Can't You Eat Grapefruit while taking the allergy drug, Allegra?I have been taking Allegra for my severe allergies my whole life. I am now 18 yrs old, and I'd like to go on the "Grapefruit Diet" to lose a couple of pounds, I am not majorly overweight, just by a few pounds. However, I noticed on my pill bottle (Allegra), it says "don't eat/drink grapefruit products" does anyone know the actual reason for this warning? I can't seem to find an answer anywhere...Thanks.

because there is a dangerous chemical interaction between the drug and compounds in the fruit. Besides, the grapefruit diet doesn't work.

grapefuit and grapefruit juice should be avoided w/a few meds.......it can reduce the clearance of medication out of your body and you end up w/possibly a toxic dose in your system......or you will be more likely to suffer the side effects caused by the medication.....

it has to do with biochemical processes that the drug is broken down in the body and similarities in processing certain chemicals in grapefruit juice or the fruit itself. something called the ctyochrome cyp450 pathway. i tried to have a pharmacist explain it once and i'd didnt really understand what he was saying.

cool, i understand. chemicals in grapefruits inhibit the breakdown of these meds in the body and the levels build up to toxic or fatal levels.
