Global Ozone (GO3) Project

In this project high school students throughout the world measure ground-level ozone on a continuous basis and upload their results to the Google Earth map. Measurements are made with high accuracy using sophisticated ozone monitors constructed by the students from kits and tested and calibrated on a frequent basis using a transfer standard. Ozone is considered the most important air pollutant from a health standpoint and is one of the Priority Air Pollutants regulated by the US EPA and comparable government agencies throughout the world. Ozone causes lung damage, strongly affecting people with asthma and other respiratory problems. Ozone reduces crop yields throughout the world and damages natural ecosystems. In addition, ozone, like carbon dioxide, is a greenhouse gas and contributes to global warming. Ozone respects no political boundaries; the ozone in any location is highly affected by air pollutants released upwind. This project will provide the means for students to continuously measure and track ground-level ozone over the surface of the Earth. The data will be available to scientists for fundamental studies of ozone production, destruction and transport.Asthma — Comprehensive overview covers symptoms, treatment of this
