How do I know if I have asthma? For a long time, I've had occasional cough with mucous.?Actually, this has happened quite frequently. How do I go about being diagnosed with it? Doctors have never told me "you have asthma." I do have allergies--dust, dust mites; allergic rhinitis. I just had a sudden episode of coughing (mucous) and a bit of wheezing. I do not take medicine for this. I was given an inhaler weeks ago to take after basketball games, for shortness of breath, but again I was not told "take it because you have asthma." Thus, I have not taken it. IS there a specific test to diagnose asthma in patients? If so what is it? When I'm at the doctor, I never have wheezing there and thus they've never heard my airways wheeze. I, too, don't hear it often, but I do often get a cough as a result of insufficient air. I don't smoke. Thank you.

Ask your doctor for PFT (Pulmonary Function Test), If you have any kind of obstructive lung disease it should show up. also there is a methacholine challenge test, here is link for this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronchial_challenge_test. This test should show if you have an asthma.
good luck
