Prayers and meditation?You read a magazine "nonphysical treatments such as meditation and prayer have been shown to be effective in controlled scientific studies for such ailments as high blodd pressure, insomnia, ulcers, and asthma." Explain in simple language what the article means by "controlled scientific studies." Why can such studies i principle provide good evidence that, for example , mediation is an effective treatment for high blood pressure?

They take the test subject's BP before she meditates. Then, she goes and meditates and they take her BP again and note the lower result.

controlled scientific studies has a 'control': this is where something is tested against the same condition without the 'treatment'
eg. two people with high blood pressure with similar lifestyles diet, etc. are montiored over a period of time. one meditates[in this example] one doesn't. both are measured.

Controlled scientific studies means that the situation can be easily recreated within a specific environment. There really isn't anything ground breaking here. Both prayer and meditation slow and deepen each breath. This hyperoxygenates the brain/blood. In turn this heals ulcer by increasing quality blood flow, lowers blood pressure by decreasing stress, makes people sleep with an increased amount of oxygen to the brain and relaxes the airway helping with asthma. Nothing new or exciting, just affirming that medical science is turning to pills to treat not treating to cure.
