Why is mouth-breathing "bad"?Normally during the day I breathe through my nose, because I don't think about it... But when I sleep I ALWAYS breath through my mouth even when I don't mean to. I always drool so that's how I know :{
But yeah. At night I try to breath through my nose but have trouble when I think about it because it feels like I'm not getting enough air. Is mouth-breathing actually considered a medical problem? Why do people say it's bad?
Oh, I have asthma, by the way.

I would go to your doctor and ask if a overnight medical study (aka sleep study) would be a good thing to see if you need more oxygen during sleep. If they do a sleep study they monitor your sleeping habits, breathing, and stress that is on your lungs and heart. A lot of people sleep with their mouths open but if the Doc wants to do a sleep study he/she is just trying to cut possible problems out!

Mouth breathing is not all that bad. The only issue is that your nose has a thick lining of mucus and a host of immune cells in it, which trap bacteria. This keeps the bacteria out of your body, because they are trapped in the mucus and attacked by your immune system. Your mouth does have some mucus, but is is very much thinned by saliva. It also does not have to level of immune cells. So, a bacteria in the air will have an easier time getting into your body through your mouth than through your nose. However, there are immune cells all through your body and mouth breathing is not going to make that much difference.
