Can you be short of breath and not know it?

Do you find what you need? Look here!

Can you be short of breath and not know it?My husband's doctor diagnosed him with "shortness of breath" althought my husband has never complained of it. Is it possible that that is something you can hear with a stethoscope, but not know you have it?
My husband had no breathing test. The doctor just listened to him breathe with a stethoscope.

Yes if you take a breathing test through an computerized breathing machine the doctor can tell if you breathing capacity is normanl or below normal.

They have a monitor that is a clip, and it is put on your index fingertip when your blood pressure is usually taken. It measures your Co2 levels. If your Co2 level is elevated, that is an indication that there is a breathing problem.

Then the doctor could hear wheezing and rattling in his lungs.

Short or shallow breathing can be easy detected by a stethoscope and not detected so easily by the person suffering from the condition. We all adapt to different conditions that should rightfully cause us pain. This happens over time due to those receptors being either overloaded or adapted to the source of the pain.
Therefore, it is very likely your husband can have shortness of breath and not know it. He's just become used to it, and doesn't realize what's happened. If this goes untreated, the lack of oxygen could do permanent organ damage, including heart damage and brain damage.
Doctors can make mistakes, though. If you ever get a diagnosis that doesn't seem right, seek a second opinion. It may seem more expensive, but likely it would cost less than years of treatment for a condition which doesn't really exist.
