Could this be an early sign of ASTHMA?My 3wk old makes a loud shreaking sound when sleeping. It doesn't sound like "wheezing," but it is a deep respiratory sound. I'm pretty sure that the sound is coming out of his mouth and not his nose, but it terrified me at first. It's hard to discuss it with his Pediatrician, because he's only 3wks old and his last appt (2wk appt), he was wide awake and not making the sounds. I was told that it was probably just "allergies." because he was also congested at the time. But he's still making the noise and not congested anymore. I'm a little afraid that he could he having trouble breathing, but I don't want to be "one of those" Moms. How soon is too soon for a child to show signs of Astham? And can anyone relate to my question or share any advice?

the high pitch noise sounds like stridor. it is breathing through narrowed airways due to swelling. next time, try taking the baby into a bathroom with hot running shower. dont go into the shower-just let the baby breathe the steam and see if it helps. if it does--tell the pediatrition.
