Is America becoming a nation of drug addicts?

Hi,I did the following:

Is America becoming a nation of drug addicts?http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2010/09/02/almost-half-of-americans-took-a-prescription-drug-in-last-month/?mod=djemHL_t

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that nearly half of Americans took prescription drugs within the last month. Undoubtedly, some of these people actually needed these drugs, but surely half of the population does not need to be taking drugs.

According to the WSJ:

"The type of drugs used most often were asthma meds for kids, central nervous system stimulants (such as those used to treat ADHD) for teens, antidepressants for the middle-aged and cholesterol-lowering drugs for older people."

Obviously, ADHD is an imaginary "disorder" that was invented by shrinks and voted into existance a few decades ago (likewise, the shrinks only voted "homosexuality" off of the list of mental disorders in the 1970s). I don't know about you, but I don't think democracy is a legitimate means to determine whether or not something is a disease and I would regard any list of "diseases" that is determined by majority vote to be suspect. Anti-depressants are also a drug nobody needs to take, since people should be able to control their moods without the aid of mind-altering substances.

Recently, I've heard stories about how the legal drug pushers are now trying to push their cholestoral drugs to children. Isn't it bad enough that the school system chooses to control their behavior problems through the use of drugs (and people wonder why all of that anti-drug education we waste our tax dollars on is so ineffective)?

When we have all of these drug pushers flooding the airwaves with ads for their latest drugs and a media that constantly propagandizes on behalf of "preventative" care (healthy people taking drugs they don't need), is it any wonder that health care costs are skyrocketing?

If you include caffeine than no doubt about it. I dont consume any drugs except for an occasional nicotine.

ya oil addicts...

what right does somebody else have to tell someone not to take drugs? If someone is depressed and want to take anti-depressants to boost their serotonin levels, then they can do what they want

Prescription drugs make a lot of money for a lot of people. It is a business; they have to sell their business and they do it well.

While I was a teen, doctors kept telling me I had ADHD. I told them they were full of crap and I didn't need to be on medication. They pulled this fear mongering game that if I didn't take stabilization medicine, I would never succeed in school or be able to sustain myself. Last year I graduated with my Masters with a 3.94 GPA while working. Guess they were wrong. I have believed for years that doctors have been drug pushers. More patients on meds mean more money for the doctors and drug companies who cater to them.
