my french bo is having an "allergy shot" today, how can the vet do that w/o knowing what she's allergic to?i have been back and forth with my vet about my 1 year old puppy because she itches until she gets staph infection/bleeds and at first they diagnosed her with mange and gave her a steroid shot about 1ce a month for 3 months, they finally told me i'll need to have her tested for allergies but we have to wait 2 months until the steroids are completely out of her system, well my dog is now is so much pain that last night she wouldn't lay down to fall asleep, she had to stand because she scratched her skin so much, i moved my allergy test appointment for her for today and i scheduled a shot after, i thought it was going to be steroid shot but she told me it would be an allergy shot, why didn't they just do that in the first place, and what does this "allergy shot" do??? i'm super confused because they have to send the test out and figure out what she's allergic to and then they told me they would give her a cocktail of shots to cure whatever she had when she got the test results back, how in the world is she going to give my dog an allergy shot without knowing what she's allergic too??
oh and her last steroid shot was december 2nd ...so i'm going five days before her scheduled time, i don't think 5 days makes that big of a difference on waiting for the steroids to get out of her system
a blanket shot would be good!! i just don't know why they wouldn't have done that in the first place when i called the previous 1,000 times saying that benedryll isn't working for her, i gave her benedryll every six hours and nothing got better still red horribly itchy skin, and if she's awake all she will do is itch and claw herself, she even just randomly wakes up to do so!

Good question. The best thing for you to do is to call the veterinary office back and ask them to clarify. I suspect you just missed something in their original communication.

It is a "blanket" shot. It will cover 100 of the most common allergies in dogs. Poor doggie. I've used Bendryl just a couple of times in my dogs when they were stung by a bee, but luckily I have never had a problem for more than a day or two. Good Luck! PS. They may be giving a shot of Bendryl. Once I had a dog bitten by something and his testicles were covered in little red bumps and I rushed him to the vet and he was better within the hour! I also had my girl get hives all over her body and took her in the middle of the night to the vet and same thing, shot was a miracle, and then they gave me a prescription for Bendryl. Didn't have to use it, but as long as you are at your vets, wouldn't hurt to get a prescription.

If they don't know what shes allergic to yet don't give her the shot it may be the med's she was given or it may be fleas or a parasite

The allergy shot they are going to give is most likely simply another steroid injection AFTER they draw the necessary sample for testing to see what exactly she is allergic to. This will buy your dog some relief until they have test results and can begin desensitization treatments.
My best guess is that the person you talked to was a veterinary assistant, on-the-job-trained "veterinary technician" or a receptionist, all of whom have little to no education or training in veterinary health care and so they just gave you a "generic" answer.
Speak to the veterinarian or a credentialed veterinary technician at your exam to find out exactly what is really going on and why. And I would recommend that you write down a list of all your questions now and take it and a pen with you so that you can write down answers at the appointment. Studies show that it is extremely common to forget questions once you are in the exam room and only remember about 50% of what you are told while you are there so writing down your questions and answers can be invaluable.
Always ask the title of anyone you are getting information from at a veterinary facility. You may find that people you thought were educated are in fact not and that can change the credibility of any information they give.
