If I DON"T want to spend a thousand dollars on a vacuum, what is a good compromise?I have allergies so I need something that obviously works well but I'd like to stay in the $ 250.00 - $ 500.00 ball park.
Any suggestions?

Consumer reports says the Eureka Boss SmartVac 4870 is the best buy - at $ 150ish
Goodhousekeeping likes the Electrolux Intensity ($ 300) for overall cleaning - and the Halo UVX ($ 399) for allergery fighting.

I have had a Dyson for three years and I really like it. It is light weight so when I need to go downstairs to vacuum, it is not a chore. I believe they have a 5 year warranty right now, but don't quote me on that. We have a dog, and this vacuum really picks up his shedding fur. It also has on board attachments, that are easy to do, so corners and blinds get clean also. The long hose is also a plus, in that the vacuum sits on the first floor and the hose reaches to the top step for vacuuming. I definitely would recommend it.
