Allergies and the "May contain..." Statement.?

Asthma Info edited the following:

Allergies and the "May contain..." Statement.?I have allergies (nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds), and I absolutely hate how all the companies are putting 'my contain peanuts', or 'made in a facility with nuts'. They are just doing it to save their own asses. They are huge companies, they can use different facilities for products with and without allergens.
How does anyone else with allergies (or with friends/family who have them) or without allergies feel about this? It affects many more people than just the ones with the allergies, my family doesnt buy/eat the products I can not eat. I have voiced my concern with these companies but they never give me a straight answer about why they dont use seperate facilities. I feel like pretty soon I am not going to be able to eat any foods. Soon enough apples will say "may contain peanuts" !

If it bothers you as much as it does me, the FDA wants to hear your comments. Its only until the 14th tho so act quick. http://www.foodallergy.org/advocacy/labeling.html Food Allergy Network talking about it. and

Oh and this applies to any allergen, not just nuts. I'm sure it must be awful for wheat/soy since they are so common.

Good for you for being on top of this issue. I also have a child who suffers from nut allergies (and others) I am a school nurse, and have had teens at my school go into anaphylactic shock from ingesting small amounts of nuts in foods. It is very dangerous. I agree that something should be done. According to our allergist, this problem is rampant in the US. Some research done in Europe, showed that children with nut allergies, were given 5 raw peanuts (large dose). They did not have a reaction. It seems that something in the roasting or processing of the nuts is what is affecting people...
Not sure any of that helps you, but I'm behind you with the concern of this issue!

Thanks for the info. I was able to write a note about my concern. Hope it helps the cause. It would be nice if one day my son didn't have to worry so much about foods that you know should be safe.

I think it's a good thing that they put it on the packaging! Prior to about two years ago, they were not required to do that, and it was sometimes just a guessing game - waiting to see if I'd have a reaction, and most of the time I wouldn't take the chance. There is at least one brand of packaged lettuce with the nut warning, and I am happy about that. There is another brand I buy regularly because I've personally used it a lot, and they don't have warning, and I don't have a reaction. I did have a small reaction to the other brand when I got it on sale once, and I started reading the package, assuming that lettuce would be nut-free. I was wrong!

One thing I still have to look for in the ingredients list, as they don't include it on the warning is sunflower seeds! I got a package of nut-free gluten-free bars last year, thinking, wonderful, I can have these! Nope, my lips started getting itchy and then swollen, and feeling like I was having an asthma attack (just like my peanut allergy seems to affect me by givng me an asthma attack - as opposed to hazel nuts, which just give me an anaphyllactic throat closing thing, which feels a lot more scary and is of course very dangerous! So I really watch for hazel nuts contamination. There are certain chocolate brands, etc, that I just can't eat - the risk of hazel nut contamination is way too high.) Anyway, these bars were full of sunflower seeds!! So far, I don't seem to be allergic to poppy seeds and coconut, which is good.

I want the warnings! But also think that some companies could make more of an effort to make their foods available to those who are allergic. For instance, if the food doesn't need nuts, then they should be able to process them in a nut-free zone!

I agree. I am sick of it too. I am allergic to peanuts, wheat, etc.etc.etc. and I hate that "May Contain"...statement. It's very annoying and not worth trying to find out if I can eat it or not. Thanks for the link.
