Which type of dog is EXCELLENT for people who never owned a dog/have kids afraid of "JUMPY" dogs.Otherthn LabsI am thinking of purchasing a dog, but never had one as a pet (but had lots of reptiles though) mostly because of my sibling's allergies, I am looking for a dog that is VERY gentle and calm, and isnt jumpy with kids (My kids are afraid of excited dogs jumping up and down to greet them) Thanks. NOTE:OTHER THAN LABS please, becase most of the people keep these breeds and its getting too annoying, same type of dog, over and over again.

The reason why people tend to give labrador for a suggestion is because they are so good with kids.
What about golden retrievers? Ive been told pugs are great with kids aswell, Im not sure if their jumpy though.

Sounds like you need a dog who is past the puppy stage, because all puppies love to jump. Adopt a mature dog, through a shelter that has a good behavioral assessment program, or through an organization that has foster parents who can give you a good assessment of the dog.

Ok - but in the same vein - golden retrievers - but lots of people have them too. People choose these breeds over and over for a reason - because they are good with kids. My sister solved the fear of dog problem with her kids by getting a lab puppy - the puppy grew gradually and the kids had a chance to get used to the fact that the dog was getting bigger. And in the meantime, they got the puppy in obedience training (and the kids helped with the training) so it had good manners and wasn't so "jumpy" and the kids knew what to do if it misbehaved. So they all learned together.
