New Betta Fish with breathing trouble?

Other people asked questions on various topics, and are still
waiting for answer. Would be great if you can take a sec and
answer them

New Betta Fish with breathing trouble?I had a female Betta for over two years and she died about two months ago. I finally got around to getting another betta today. I cleaned out the tank completely with water and a aquarium sponge (no soap). I also got new gravel and rinsed it well. I treated the water to declorinate it (or whatever - LOL) and added 1/4 teaspoon of aquarium salt. I have a 2.5 gallon tank.

Anyway, he seems to be breathing kind of heavily. He was fine for the first few hours, though. When he "breathes", it looks like something is coming through his gills - it's dark in color and is also visible under his mouth where his head seperates from his body. Is this normal or is he sick? If he's sick, what should I do? He seemed fine when i bought him - he looked healthy.

That is just his "beard" or gill membrane! All male bettas have it. When he is less stressed from his move in a few days, let him see a reflection of himself in a mirror. He will flare his beard nice and big at the "other betta". Females do not have this beard.

He is probably just stressed from the move, which is why he is breathing heavy. The aquarium salt should help, though. Just give him some space and time to settle down. He probably is healthy. But a stressed betta can be pale and listless.

Do you have an aquarium heater in his 2.5 gallon? If not, you really should get one. A betta is a tropical fish, and needs temperatures of 76-82*F in order to be healthy and live a long life!

I hope this helps :)
