What does this sound like?My 4-year old usually gets a really deep, bronchitus- sounding cough a few days after he starts a cold. Also, whenever he gets a cold, his nose never runs, he just sniffs it in. (Yes, I try to get him to "blow" but he usually can't/won't do it.) This (every cold turning into a bad cough) has been going on for about a year, and the first 2 times he was diagnosed with bronchitus, and given amoxicillin, which did make the cough go away. But today his pediatrician said that it may be viral- induced asthma since he still gets the cough even when there is no mucus in his lungs. Today he was coughing almost non-stop, about every 5-30 seconds. He also seemed really tired, his eyes (around them) were red, and he was extremely crabby. The ped gave him an inhaler with albuterol and a steroid to stop the coughing. So I have been looking up "viral-induced asthma" online, and the symptoms seem to match up with his, except that everywhere I look, it says that with viral induced asthma, the coughing is worse at night. Now, my son's coughing improves at night, in fact, once he is asleep, I usually don't hear anything until morning. So could it still be viral- induced asthma?
Caleb-
Yes, we went to the pediatrition today.
Lone Star-
We did get a spacer :)
Jordan,
He has never had pneumonia, just bronchitus. And we do have the spacer with the mask; so far we have just used it once (we got it tonight) and he HATES it but hopefully he will get used to it. :) I'm not exactly sure if it is a wet cough or a dry one; it sounds like a deep, barking cough though. He doesn't usually wheeze, although last time we went into the pediatrician (about a month ago), she could hear a slight wheeze when she listened with a stethoscope. This time she didn't hear it.

yes, it could definitely still be viral-induced asthma. Remember: symptoms you read about are always very general, and can vary from person to person.

Possibly a upper respiratory infection. Have you consulted a physician in the past 6 weeks?
Also it may be chronic asthma. I have it and my Dr. prescribed me Ventolin inhalation. Good Luck

Whatever flavor they want to pin on it, its asthma. Give the inhalers, as prescribed, to help your little one get over this episode. I hope you're using a masked spacer with that inhaler. If not, call your doctor back and insist on getting one. More medication will be delivered into the deeper chambers of the lungs where it is needed.

I don't really have any advice. .i just saw this question.. but dam... i'd be crabby too if i was coughing every 30 seconds and im pretty sure my eyes would be red as a result of the coughing...but id listen to the other answers because symptoms do vary for everyone.
